Kvaloy had been interested in UW-GB long before he began teaching there. He had heard it was a university which attracted students and teachers interested in ecology. "The university is built on this interest," Kvaloy said.

"I thought it was a new thing, a good thing." He visited the campus to give a lecture in November 1977 and was asked to return to teach his special month-long course. What would he like his students to get our of his class? "I like them to be politically active to contribute to changing the course of society," he replied. Kvaloy said his philosophy is based on producing what is necessary to strengthen the life process, not to destroy it as, he said, we are doing today. Ultimately, he is hoping some of the UW-GB teachers and students will join the European organization "Economical Ring of Cooperation." This group formulates ecopolitics on the basis of ecophilosophy. Kvaloy is staying with Mrs.

Rankin on this trip, as he has on all his previous visits to Manitowoc. Mrs. Rankin started the Manitowoc AFS program in 1951 and Kvaloy was one of her first students, They became friends. "She's like a mother, the biggest and greatest mother I know of almost like Mother Earth," he said. In 1962, when Kvaloy and his fiance, Kirsten, wanted to skip an elaborate church wedding in Norway, Mrs.

Rankin invited them to be married in front of her living room fireplace. "We felt like we were at he said simply. Since Kvaloy appears to be dedicated to his work, it seemed appropriate to ask his wife if she shared his interest. By JULIE SCHAEFER Hera ld-Tim-Rcporter Staff Writer Sigmund Kvaloy of Norway is an adventurer. He began his exploits in 1952 when he traveled to Manitowoc to be Lincoln High School's American Field Service student.

Kvaloy returned to the Lakeshore Area in 1962 to be married in the home of Mrs. Frances Rankin, whom he met through the AFS program. Two years ago Kvaloy was in San Francisco on business but found time to visit Manitowoc and Mrs. Rankin again. He's back, this time to teach a special course at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Between visits to the United States, Kvaloy studied philosophy at the University of Oslo, traveled extensively and became interested in ecophilosophy. Ecophilosophy is not exactly a household word. The term was originated in Norway in 1969 when the first university seminar was conducted on the subject. According to Kvaloy, ecophilosophy is an attempt to use the tools of philosophers to try to understand more about the relationship between man and nature and man and man. He said it asks the question: "Why is our industrial society destroying itself like it By "destroy" Kvaloy said he meant "depleting the resources, creating conflict between nations and people through competition." It is, he added, quite a serious study.

Kvaloy is carrying on this study with a one-month interim course at UW-GB. He has nothing but praise for this campus. "I like it very much. It's a very good environment," he said. "The class is one of the best I ve had He referred to the 10 juniors, to attend Lincoln High School as their father had done 25 years earlier.

They are members of the International Folk Dancing Club and are planning a trip to Turkey to learn more about the dance of that country. Kvalov will return to his position as a research fellow with the School of Architecture in Oslo.

He also teaches ecophilosophy at the University of Oslo and the University of Gotthenburg, Sweden. He plans to continue traveling to Germany, Belgium and Holland to participate in international groups which have an ecophilosophic direction. He would like to teach at UW-GB again. Eventually Kvaloy wants to take over the family farm in Trondelag, Norway, a farm which has been in his mother's family since the days of the Vikings. Last summer the 17-year-old daughter of Bjorn Halvorsen of Manitowoc worked on this farm.

Kvaloy and "Bj" have been close friends since they were LHS seniors together. "This summer, Bj, his mother and his other daughter are coming," Kvaloy said, adding with a smile, "We are happy to get all that American help on our farm."
